About Shirakamisanchi

The Shirakami Sanchi (Shirakami Mountain Range) is a vast mountainous area straddling Akita and Aomori prefectures, and is a World Natural Heritage site with a precious natural environment. The area is especially known for its virgin beech forests, which have been preserved in their pristine natural state. The primeval forests have a history of approximately 8,000 years and are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.

The Shirakami Sanchi is characterized by its rich ecosystem and biodiversity. The beech forests provide a habitat for many plants and animals that have adapted to the unique climate and topography of the region. Beech trees, in particular, play a role in the forest's water source recharge function, supplying clean water. The area is also home to wildlife such as Japanese serow and black bears, and visitors can enjoy nature observation.

A recommended activity is trekking across the Shirakami Mountains. Typical routes include the Shirakamidake Climbing Route and the Twelve Lakes Course, each offering different scenery and experiences. The Twelve Lakes Course, in particular, is dotted with a number of lakes and marshes, among them “Aoike,” which, as its name suggests, is a beautiful blue lake popular among many tourists. The view of the forest reflected on the surface of Aoike is fantastic and an unforgettable sight once seen.

Visitors can also learn about the nature and culture of the area at the Shirakami Sanchi Visitor Center. Through exhibits and videos, visitors can deepen their understanding of the Shirakami Sanchi ecosystem and conservation efforts, and stop by before visiting for a more in-depth experience.

In addition, the culture and traditions of the region are another highlight of the museum. Villages in the Shirakami Sanchi area have crafts and festivals that have been handed down from generation to generation, allowing visitors to feel the harmony between the lives of the local people and nature. In particular, local cuisine using local ingredients is one of the great pleasures for visitors.

All in all, Shirakami Sanchi is a special tourist destination that combines its rich nature, unique ecosystem, and cultural attractions. It offers visitors a deeply moving and educational experience, and its special atmosphere is an unforgettable experience once you visit.
