Mt. Iimori

About Mt. Iimori

Mt. Iimori is a historically and culturally important tourist destination located in Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. It is especially known for the tragic episode of Byakkotai in the Boshin War, and is visited by many people as the place where they committed suicide. The slopes of Mt. Iimori are lined with the graves and monuments of the Byakkotai, making it a special place where visitors can feel the history of Aizu and the spirit of Bushido.

The most significant feature of Mt. Iimori is its deep connection to the story of the Byakkotai. The Byakkotai were boy soldiers who fought to defend the Aizu domain during the Boshin War. They mistakenly believed that Aizu Wakamatsu Castle, which could be seen from this mountain, was on fire, and in desperation they committed suicide. Their graves still stand and are visited by many tourists and history buffs in memory of their sacrifice. In this area, there are also exhibits and a museum about Byakkotai, where you can learn more about the historical background of the time and their way of life.

Another attraction of Mt. Iimori is its scenery and natural environment. From the top of the mountain, the entire city of Aizuwakamatsu can be seen, especially on a clear day, and beautiful mountains such as Bandai-san can be seen in the distance. The scenery changes with the seasons, with cherry blossoms in spring, lush foliage in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snow in winter. The summit can be reached on foot, but a ramp car is also available, making it easy for those with limited physical strength or the elderly to visit.

Furthermore, Mt. Iimori is also home to “Sazae-do,” a building with a unique double-helix structure. This building was built in 1796 and has an unusual structure in that the uphill and downhill paths do not intersect. Sazae-do is also of great historical value and is one of the attractions of Mt. Iimori for visitors. The experience of moving through the hall is like stepping back in time, and one is reminded of the depth of history and culture.

Mt. Iimori is a tourist destination that blends historical significance with natural beauty. Visitors can learn about a part of Japanese history by experiencing the tragedy of the Byakkotai, or they can savor the special experience of history and nature by enjoying the Sazae-do Temple and the beautiful scenery. For both history buffs and tourists who enjoy nature, Mt. Iimori is a sightseeing spot not to be missed.
