About Wakamatsujo (Castle)
Wakamatsu Castle (also known as Tsurugajo), located in Aizu-Wakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, is one of the oldest castles in Japan, characterized by its beautiful white walls and red-tiled castle tower. The castle dates back to the 14th century, and has since served as a political and military base for the Aizu region throughout the Warring States Period and the Edo Period. It was the scene of the Boshin War and is also known as a place that tells the story of the Byakkotai and other fierce historical figures. Tsurugajo Castle was later rebuilt and is now a popular tourist attraction that attracts many visitors.
Wakamatsu Castle's most distinctive features are its beautiful exterior and historical background. In particular, the red-tiled castle tower is rare among Japanese castles and leaves a strong impression on visitors. These red tiles were used to enhance the castle's durability in cold weather, a traditional technique dating back to the Sengoku period. The castle is surrounded by fine stone walls, an important cultural asset that conveys the defensive structure of the Warring States Period to the present day.
Inside the castle is a museum where visitors can learn about the history and culture related to Tsurugajo. Exhibits include materials on the lifestyle of the samurai, the battles of the Boshin War, and the Byakkotai, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the history of the Aizu domain and its samurai spirit. Visitors can also climb up to the castle tower and enjoy a panoramic view of Aizu Wakamatsu City from the top floor, making it a great place to enjoy the beautiful scenery that changes with the seasons. Especially in spring, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the contrast between the castle and the cherry blossoms creates a spectacular view.
In addition, the area around the castle, which has been developed as Tsurugajo Park, is popular as a walking course. The vast grounds are dotted with Japanese gardens and teahouses, and visitors can experience the history of the castle while walking slowly. The tea house “Rinkaku” was created by Ujisato Gamo, a warlord of the Warring States period, and is a place where visitors can experience traditional tea ceremony culture. Spending time in this quiet environment while tasting powdered green tea is an exceptional experience for visitors.
Wakamatsu Castle is also illuminated at night, and a visit at night offers a different and fantastic view of the castle than during the day. The illuminated castle and the surrounding landscape look like a painting, making it a popular photo spot for many tourists.
Tsurugajo Castle is a tourist attraction that not only has historical heritage value, but also offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy the culture and nature of Aizu. It is a special place that will remain in the hearts of history buffs as well as those who wish to experience nature and culture.
