About Takasaki Kannon

The Takasaki Kannon (Takasaki Goddess of Mercy) in Gunma Prefecture is a gigantic statue of the Goddess of Mercy, officially known as the Jigenin Shiraigoromo Taikannon, and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture. Standing 41.8 meters tall, this large Kannon statue was erected in 1936 to pray for world peace. Its pure white appearance makes it a symbol of Takasaki City, and its grandeur can be seen even from a distance.

The greatest attraction of the Takasaki Kannon is its overwhelming sense of scale. Inside the Kannon statue are stairs that can be climbed, and visitors can enjoy the view of the surroundings through 12 windows as they ascend inside the statue. The topmost window in particular offers visitors a beautiful panoramic view of Takasaki City, the surrounding mountains, and the Kanto Plain. This view changes with the seasons, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall, making Takasaki Kannon an attractive place to enjoy the scenery of the four seasons.

In addition, Kannon Mountain, where the Takasaki Kannon stands, is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a relaxing place for visitors to enjoy the natural surroundings. Around the Kannon statue, cherry, plum, azalea, and other trees are planted, especially in spring when the flowers are in full bloom, making it a popular spot for flower viewing with the Kannon statue in the background. In addition, a walking trail on Kannon Mountain has been developed, allowing visitors to get in touch with nature while relaxing.

There are many other attractions in the vicinity of Takasaki Kannon. At the foot of the Kannon statue is the Jigenin Temple, where prayers and good luck charms are offered. The entire Kannon Mountain area has been developed as Gunma Prefectural Kannon Mountain Park, with playground equipment for children, a plaza, and an observatory, making it ideal for sightseeing with the whole family. There is also a small zoo and botanical garden nearby, making the entire Kannonyama area an all-day recreation spot.
