About Maruyama Zoo

Maruyama Zoo is a historic zoo located in Chuo-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido, and was opened in 1951. Located near the center of Sapporo City and adjacent to Maruyama Park, the zoo is blessed with a natural environment. The zoo focuses on animal welfare and education, attracting visitors with its diverse animal exhibits and well-equipped facilities.

One of the attractions of Maruyama Zoo is its diverse animal exhibits. Approximately 170 different species of animals are kept in the zoo, recreating various ecosystems from around the world, from the Arctic Circle to tropical rainforests. In particular, popular animals such as polar bears, Amur tigers, and red pandas can be observed up close, and you will be impressed by their powerful appearance.

Maruyama Zoo also has a wonderful ingenuity in its exhibits. Exhibit areas have been carefully designed so that the animals can spend time in an environment close to their natural habitat, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of their ecology and behavior. For example, in the Asian Rainforest Pavilion, visitors can not only observe animals living in the jungle, but also learn about the importance of the natural environment through a variety of plant and insect exhibits.

The museum also offers a full range of educational programs that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. Many opportunities to learn about animal ecology and conservation are provided, such as guided tours by animal keepers, hands-on animal encounters, and workshops. This allows visitors to learn about animals while having fun.

Furthermore, Maruyama Zoo offers different ways to enjoy the zoo each season. In spring, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and visitors can enjoy beautiful cherry blossom viewing and animal observation at the same time. In summer, visitors can enjoy picnics in the lush greenery of the zoo, and in autumn, the autumn leaves create a beautiful landscape. In winter, animals can be seen moving around energetically in the snowy landscape, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of nature in each of the four seasons.

Maruyama Zoo is an attractive tourist spot for its abundant animal species, ingenious exhibits, and educational programs. Visitors will have an enjoyable time rediscovering the wonders of nature and animals. When visiting Sapporo, be sure to visit Maruyama Zoo and enjoy its diverse attractions.
