About Genbikei

Genbikei is a beautiful valley located in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture, and is a tourist attraction with spectacular scenery created by nature. The 2-kilometer-long gorge was formed by the clear waters of the Iwai River over a long period of time, and the strange rocks, huge boulders, and waterfalls that rise up on both sides of the river are in perfect harmony and fascinate visitors. Genbikei Gorge is also known for its beautiful autumn foliage, and has been selected as one of the “100 Views of Japan” for its beauty.

The greatest feature of Genbikei Gorge is the beauty of its scenery in each of the four seasons. In spring, cherry blossoms and fresh greenery adorn the valley, and in summer, the murmuring of the river cools the visitors. In autumn, when the maple trees and maples turn bright red, the contrast of the autumn leaves reflected on the surface of the river is especially breathtaking. In winter, the serenity of the snow-covered rocks and the mountain stream deeply impresses visitors. The beauty of these natural features takes on a different appearance in each season, so that visitors can discover new charms no matter how many times they visit.

One of the most enjoyable tourist attractions in Genbikei Gorge is the “Kakkoya,” famous for its “flying dumplings. In this unique service, visitors are asked to place dumplings in bamboo baskets and cross the river using a rope from a teahouse on the opposite bank of the gorge. On the signal of an order, the bamboo basket glides across to the other side of the river, and the arrival of the dumplings in the basket is a pleasant surprise and delight to visitors. The dumplings are a special experience that can only be had at Genbikei Gorge while listening to the murmuring of the river and enjoying the picturesque scenery.

In addition, walking paths and observation decks have been established around Genbikei Gorge, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the valley. Walking along the trails, visitors can enjoy the scenery of the valley from various angles, and will be refreshed and at peace in nature. There are also several waterfalls along the gorge, whose clear streams contrast beautifully with the rocks, making it an ideal spot for photography.

Genbikei Gorge is more than just a scenic spot; it is a place where visitors can enjoy a dialogue with nature. The valley is a special sightseeing spot that allows visitors to forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life and feel the changing of the seasons, purifying the mind and giving new energy.
