About Yakushima
Yakushima is a natural treasure located in Kagoshima Prefecture and was the first island in Japan to be registered as a World Natural Heritage site. Yakushima is characterized by its rich natural environment and diverse ecosystems. The entire island has a subtropical climate and is known for its humid environment, with one of the highest annual rainfalls in Japan. This high rainfall environment nurtures rich forests, including the Yakusugi cedar trees.
The symbol of Yakushima, the “Jomon Cedar,” is a giant cedar tree believed to be several thousand years old and is one of the most famous tourist attractions on the island. These large cedars have grown over a long period of time, and their majestic appearance overwhelms visitors. Trekking to the Jomon cedars is one of the most popular activities on Yakushima, and the sense of accomplishment you get from the steep mountain paths is exceptional.
Yakushima is also known for its unique flora and fauna. Many endemic species can be found here, especially animals such as the yakushima sika deer and yakushima macaque. These creatures are protected as part of the island's rich ecosystem and visitors can observe them in their natural habitat.
Yakushima is also home to many beautiful waterfalls and rivers. Shiratani-unsui Gorge and Okawa Falls attract many tourists with their beauty and mysterious atmosphere. Shiratani-unsui Gorge, in particular, is known as the model for the setting of “Princess Mononoke,” with its fantastic scenery of mossy forests and clear streams.
One of the best places to visit is the hot springs scattered around the island. In particular, the “Hirauchi Kainaka Onsen” is a natural open-air hot spring located on the shore, and bathing in it is possible at different times of the day, as it is immersed in seawater at high tide. This special hot spring experience is a unique way to enjoy Yakushima.
All in all, Yakushima is a special tourist destination that combines its rich natural environment, diverse ecosystems, and unique cultural attractions. It offers visitors a deeply moving and healing experience, and its special atmosphere is an unforgettable experience once you visit.
