About Shojokoji(Temple)

Shojyokoji Temple (also known as “Yugyoji Temple”), located in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture, is the head temple of the Jishu sect of Buddhism and has played an important role in the history of Buddhism in Japan. Seijo-ko-ji Temple was founded in 1296 during the late Kamakura period (1185-1333) by Shonin Ippen, and flourished as the center of the Jishu sect of Buddhism. Widely known as Yugyo-ji Temple, it is a precious place that conveys the teachings of Ippen, the founder of the Jishu sect.

The most significant features of Seiko-ji Temple are its extensive grounds and historical architecture. The temple grounds house the nationally designated Important Cultural Property “Yugyo Shonin Eden” and the “Seated Statue of Ippen Shonin,” providing visitors with a valuable opportunity to experience Buddhist art and history. In particular, the majestic main hall and the three-story pagoda are deeply moving places for visitors with their historical significance.

Seiko-ji Temple is also known as a place where visitors can enjoy a different atmosphere each season. In spring, the temple grounds are decorated with cherry blossoms, and the path lined with cherry trees is especially popular among locals and tourists. In autumn, the autumn leaves are beautiful and provide a serene atmosphere for a leisurely stroll. The combination of these natural beauties and the historical buildings makes for a great photo opportunity.

Various Buddhist events are held throughout the year at Seijo-ko-ji Temple. Of these, the “New Year's Eve Bell Ringing” at the end of the year is particularly popular, with many locals gathering to strike the bell. This event is attended by many worshippers as a ceremony to look back on the old year and purify the heart to welcome the new year.

Furthermore, the area surrounding Seiko-ji Temple is conveniently located for sightseeing, with easy access to the historic town of Fujisawa City and Enoshima Island. This makes it possible not only to visit Seiko-ji Temple but also to enjoy sightseeing in the surrounding area.

Seiko-ji Temple is a special place where history, nature, and Buddhist teachings are deeply combined, and is a sightseeing spot that offers new discoveries and impressions with each visit.
