About Ginkakuji(Temple)

Ginkakuji Temple, officially known as Jishoji Temple, is a Zen temple located in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, and was built by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the eighth shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate. Its beautiful architecture and gardens represent the Higashiyama culture and attract many tourists.

Ginkakuji is characterized by its simple beauty without silver leaf, and the two-story Kannon-den (Kannon Hall) combines different architectural styles, the Shoin-zukuri on the first floor and the Zen Buddhist style on the second floor, in perfect harmony. The upper level, where the statue of Kannon Bosatsu is enshrined, is known as "Kannon-den" and is particularly attractive for its simplicity and elegance.

The garden is another major attraction of Ginkakuji. The garden, a fusion of a karesansui (dry landscape) garden and a pond garden, is considered a symbol of the Higashiyama culture, and its beauty can be enjoyed in all seasons. In particular, "Ginsadan" and "Kougetsu-dai" are symbolic formations made of white sand, which reflect moonlight at night to create a fantastic scene.

Ginkakuji Temple is in harmony not only with its historical background but also with the surrounding nature. With the greenery of Higashiyama in the background, the temple attracts many tourists who come to enjoy its beautiful scenery during the cherry blossom season in spring and the autumn foliage season in fall. Because of its quiet mountain location, visitors can forget the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a moment of peace and tranquility.

Furthermore, Ginkakuji Temple is located along the Philosopher's Path, which is known as the path taken by the philosopher Kitaro Nishida. This path leading south from Ginkakuji Temple is also famous for its cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, making a stroll while enjoying the seasonal scenery a special experience.

As mentioned above, Ginkakuji Temple is an attractive sightseeing spot for its simple beauty, historical architecture and gardens, and harmony with nature. When you visit, you will be able to enjoy the serenity and beauty of the temple and refresh your body and soul.
