About Kenninji(Temple)
Kenninji Temple, located in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, is the head temple of the Kenninji School of Rinzai Zen Buddhism, founded by Zen master Eisai in 1202. It is the third of the Kyoto Gozan (five mountains), and is a place where the spirit of Zen lives on along with its long history.
Kenninji Temple's most notable features are its historical architecture and beautiful gardens. Many important cultural properties and national treasures are scattered throughout the temple grounds, attracting visitors with their solemn atmosphere. In particular, the main hall, the Dharma Hall, the Hojo and other buildings embody the simple yet powerful beauty of Zen Buddhism. The fusuma paintings in the hojo, "Wind and Thunder Gods" by Tawaraya Sotatsu, are especially famous for their dynamic brushwork that overwhelms the viewer.
The garden of Kenninji Temple is another highlight of the temple. The karesansui (dry landscape) garden "Daioen Garden" and the pond garden "Chion-tei Garden" are beautiful spaces of tranquility and harmony. These gardens express the spirit of Zen and provide visitors with a profound sense of peace and tranquility.
Kenninji also offers Zen meditation and sutra copying experiences, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the teachings of Zen. These experiences allow visitors to spend precious time away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and quiet their minds. The zazen experience is particularly popular with many participants, as it is easy for even beginners to participate and allows them to learn the basics of Zen under the guidance of a guru.
In addition, the Kenninji temple grounds offer the beauty of nature in each of the four seasons. Visitors can enjoy different seasonal scenes: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowy landscapes in winter. The autumn foliage is especially beautiful in fall and leaves leave a lasting impression on visitors.
The area surrounding Kenninji Temple is also ideal for strolling around the Gion and Hanamikoji areas, which offer a typical Kyoto atmosphere. After visiting Kenninji Temple, visitors can enjoy the history and culture of Kyoto while touring the surrounding sights.
Kenninji Temple is a special place for its history, beautiful architecture and gardens, and Zen spirit. When you visit Kyoto, be sure to visit Kenninji Temple and experience its profound charm.
