About Shugakuin Imperial Villa
Shugakuin Rikyu is an imperial detached palace located in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, and was built by Emperor Gosui in the early Edo period. It features beautiful gardens and historical buildings spread over a vast area, attracting many visitors.
Shugakuin Rikyu consists of three teahouses (upper, middle, and lower) and a vast garden connecting them. Each teahouse has a different view and offers something new to discover each time you visit. The view from the upper teahouse is particularly spectacular, offering not only a panoramic view of Kyoto city, but also the mountains in the distance. A stroll while enjoying this view is truly a luxurious experience.
The garden is designed as a pond garden, with a pond as the center of the garden, and visitors can enjoy a variety of views as they walk around the pond. Within the garden are artificial hills, ravines, and waterfalls that skillfully incorporate the beauty of nature. Another attraction of the garden is that visitors can enjoy the scenery in each of the four seasons. Visitors can enjoy different beauty depending on the time of year: cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowy landscapes in winter.
The buildings are another attraction. Each teahouse preserves the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture, with furnishings and paintings of historical value displayed inside. The Kamigo-chaya, which is said to have been designed by Emperor Gosuio, is particularly remarkable for its ingenuity and beauty in every detail. The tatami-matted rooms, shoji screens, and fusuma paintings all reflect a traditional Japanese sense of beauty.
Furthermore, Shugakuin Rikyu is also attractive for its tranquil environment. Since tours of the Rikyu are conducted by appointment only, only a limited number of people are allowed to enter, allowing visitors to enjoy the quiet and serene atmosphere. This allows visitors to appreciate the gardens and buildings in a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.
Shugakuin Rikyu is an attractive sightseeing spot for its extensive gardens, beautiful buildings, and tranquil environment. Visitors will be deeply impressed by the traditional beauty and history of Japan. When visiting Kyoto, be sure to visit Shugakuin Rikyu and enjoy its charms.
