About Manjuji(Temple)

Manju-ji Temple is a temple of the Tofukuji school of the Rinzai sect, located in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, and is known as a place steeped in history and culture. The temple dates back to the Heian period (794-1192) and was built by Emperor Kammu in 794. This temple with its long history attracts visitors with its numerous cultural assets and beautiful gardens.

The most distinctive feature of Manjusri Temple is its tranquility and serene atmosphere. Although located in the center of Higashiyama-ku, the temple offers a quiet environment without any hustle and bustle. Here, you can relax and take your time. In particular, the garden on the temple grounds offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy the changing scenery of the four seasons, providing healing and peace of mind.

The garden, known as a karesansui garden, features a simple but beautiful design composed only of stones and sand. Visitors can stroll through the garden and enjoy the natural beauty and harmony of the landscape. The garden is also surrounded by a profusion of seasonal flowers, offering new discoveries and impressions with each visit.

Architecture is another highlight of Manjusri Temple. Among the many historic buildings that remain, the main hall is particularly important. Inside the main hall are numerous cultural assets, including Buddhist statues and paintings. These cultural assets are of great historical value, as they convey to the present day Japanese Buddhist art dating from the Heian period (794-1192).

Manjusri Temple is also known as a place for Zen practice. Here, visitors can experience the teachings of Zen through Zen meditation and sutra copying. The zazen experience, in particular, provides a valuable opportunity for quieting the mind and reflection. This allows many people to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and regain peace of mind.

Manjusri Temple is an attractive tourist spot for its tranquil setting, beautiful gardens, historical architecture, and the experience of Zen training. When visiting Kyoto, be sure to visit Manjusri Temple and enjoy its rich history, culture, and natural beauty.
