About Tofukuji(Temple)
Tofukuji Temple, located in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, is the head temple of the Tofukuji School of the Rinzai Sect of Zen Buddhism, and was founded in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) by Doie Kujo. The temple was named after Todaiji Temple and Kofukuji Temple in Nara. Its vast grounds, beautiful gardens, and historical buildings attract many tourists.
The most distinctive feature of Tofukuji Temple is its beautiful garden. The autumn foliage, especially in fall, is famous throughout Japan, and the view from Tsutenkyo Bridge on the temple grounds is breathtaking. Tsutenkyo Bridge crosses a ravine that runs through the center of the temple grounds, and the carpet of autumn leaves seen from that height is like a work of natural art. Many tourists visit the temple in the fall to enjoy the beautiful autumn leaves.
Furthermore, Tofukuji Temple is home to many important cultural properties, and the Hojo (main hall) in particular is known for its magnificence. The Hojo Garden is famous for its karesansui (dry landscape garden), a beautiful landscape expressed only with sand and stones. The garden was designed by Mirei Shigemori, a gardener of the Showa period (1926-1989), and its modern yet traditional design is overwhelming to the eye.
Tofukuji Temple is also home to Japan's largest gate, Sanmon, which has been designated a National Treasure. Designated as a National Treasure, the gate's majestic appearance attracts visitors. Once inside the gate, visitors are greeted by the expansive temple grounds and beautiful garden.
Tofukuji Temple is also a place where one can experience the spirit of Zen. There are many tachu temples scattered throughout the temple grounds, each with its own unique garden and buildings. By touring these tachu temples, visitors can experience the teachings and practices of Zen. In particular, Zen meditation and sutra copying experiences are offered, allowing visitors to quiet their minds and spend time in deep reflection.
Tofukuji Temple is a special place with its beautiful foliage, historical architecture, and Zen spirit. Visitors are sure to be healed in body and soul as they enjoy the richness of nature and culture. When you visit Kyoto, be sure to visit Tofukuji Temple and enjoy its charms to the fullest.
