About Zenkoji (Temple)
Zenkoji Temple, located in Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture, is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan, with a history of approximately 1,400 years. With the oldest statue of Buddha in Japan, “Ikko-Sanson Amida Nyorai,” as its principal image, the temple is well known to many people as a “nondenominational temple” that anyone can visit regardless of religious affiliation. Zenkoji Temple is also known as the spiritual center of the Japanese people, and has long been said to be a temple that should be visited at least once in a lifetime, attracting many worshippers and tourists every year.
The greatest feature of Zenkoji Temple is its magnificent temple architecture. The main hall in particular is designated as a national treasure and is one of the largest wooden structures in Japan. Inside, there is an inner sanctuary where the main image, the object of worship, is enshrined, and visitors can experience the “O-kaidan rounds”. During this tour of the okidan, visitors can perform a special ritual in which they touch the locks that symbolize the blessings of the Buddha as they proceed in darkness through the basement of the main hall. This mystical experience greatly impresses visitors and provides an opportunity to purify the mind.
In addition, beautiful historical buildings such as “Sanmon” and “Yamamon” stand side by side in the precincts of Zenkoji Temple. The San-mon Gate, in particular, is designated as an important cultural property, and from its second floor one can enjoy a panoramic view of the city of Nagano. Furthermore, the approach to the temple is lined with tasteful streets and traditional souvenir stores and eateries. Along with visiting Zenkoji Temple, visitors can enjoy strolling along the approach to taste local specialties and purchase Buddhist ritual implements and Japanese sundries.
Another attraction of Zenkoji Temple is its beautiful seasonal scenery. In spring, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and the beautiful pink color of the temple grounds is a sight to behold. The view of the cherry blossoms against the backdrop of Zenkoji's main hall is especially popular among photo enthusiasts. Also, in autumn, the precincts of Zenkoji are beautifully colored with autumn leaves, and the contrast between the historical buildings and the vivid nature is extremely beautiful. The snowy winter scenery is also fantastic, and Zenkoji Temple, with its different appearances throughout the four seasons, is a place where visitors can discover new charms no matter how many times they visit.
Zenkoji Temple is also known for its various annual events. In particular, the “Gokaicho” is a large-scale event that takes place once every seven years, and attracts many believers and tourists as the main image of the temple is opened to the public, which is normally not possible to see. This event attracts attention from all over Japan as a rare opportunity to deepen one's faith while experiencing history and tradition.
Zenkoji Temple is also a place where visitors can learn about Buddhism and its culture. The Zenkoji Archives is located on the temple grounds, where materials related to the temple's history and Buddhism are on display. In particular, the displays of Buddhist statues, sutras, and ancient documents are not to be missed by those interested in Buddhism and history.
All in all, Zenkoji Temple is a tourist attraction that combines magnificent architecture, beautiful nature, deep faith, and history. It is a place that brings peace of mind to visitors and provides a rare opportunity to experience Japanese culture and faith.
