About Oura Cathedral
Located in Nagasaki Prefecture, Oura Tenshudo is known as the oldest existing Christian church in Japan and attracts many tourists for its history and beauty. It was later registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a “symbol of early Christian missionary work in Japan.
One of the features of Oura Tenshudo is its Gothic architectural style. The beautiful spire and stained glass windows at the front of the church leave a deep impression on visitors. The light shining through the interior stained glass windows is particularly fantastic, and the sight is well worth seeing. The altar and sculptures inside the church are also a highlight, and visitors will be overwhelmed by the elaborate workmanship.
One of the reasons this church is particularly noteworthy is the discovery of the “Hidden Christians,” a group of Christians who went into hiding and confessed their faith here in 1865, an event widely known as a symbolic moment in the revival of Christianity in Japan. You can learn more about this historical episode through the displays and information boards inside the church.
One point of recommendation is the view from the church. Located on a hill, Oura Tenshudo offers a beautiful view of Nagasaki Port and the city. Especially at dusk, the church offers a fantastic view of the sun setting over the harbor, making it a popular spot for many tourists to take pictures.
There are also many sightseeing spots around the church, such as “Glover Garden” and “Holland Slope,” where visitors can enjoy the exotic atmosphere of Nagasaki. Glover Garden, located a short walk from the church, is a beautiful garden with a collection of 19th century Western architecture, and is a special place where exoticism and Japanese history intersect.
