About Heijo Palace Site

Heijo Palace Site (Heijo Kyuseki) is a Japanese historical site located in Nara City, Nara Prefecture, and constituted the centre of Heijo-kyo, the capital of Japan during the Nara Period (710 - 794). This vast site was registered as part of UNESCO's World Heritage Site of Ancient Nara in 1998 and is a great place to experience Japan's ancient history.

The main features of the Heijo Palace Site are its extensive grounds and recreated ancient architecture. In particular, the primary Daigoku-den Hall, where court ceremonies of the time were held, was restored in 2001. Inside the Daigoku-den, the Emperor's throne and the lavish decorations have been recreated, giving visitors a sense of the court culture of the Nara period.

Another highlight is the To-in Garden. This garden was once used by emperors and aristocrats and features a beautiful pond and stone bridge. With its seasonal scenery, this garden is an ideal spot for a stroll. The beauty of the garden attracts many visitors, especially during the cherry blossom season in spring and the autumn foliage season in autumn.

The Heijo Palace Site Historical Park also houses the Heijo Palace Site Museum, where visitors can learn about life and culture in the Nara period. The museum displays excavated artefacts and reconstructed models, allowing visitors to learn more about the urban planning and construction techniques of the time. There are also hands-on exhibits that can be enjoyed by both children and adults.

Furthermore, visitors can freely walk around the vast Heijo Palace site and enjoy history and nature at the same time. Free guided tours are also offered on a regular basis, allowing visitors to explore the ruins while receiving detailed explanations from expert guides.

The Heijo Palace Site is an attractive tourist destination for its historical value, beautifully restored architecture and rich natural environment. Visitors can spend an enriching time experiencing the history and culture of Nara-era Japan. When visiting Nara, be sure to visit the Heijo Palace Site and enjoy its charms.
