About Toshodaiji(Temple)
Toshodaiji Temple, located in Nara City, Nara Prefecture, was founded in 759 by Ganjin Wajo, who came to Japan from China. The temple has a unique charm, combining ancient Japanese Buddhist architecture with the culture of the Tang dynasty in China, and is registered as part of UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage List of Ancient Nara.
The main feature of Toshodai-ji Temple is the beauty and well-preserved condition of its ancient architecture. In particular, the Kondo (Golden Hall) is known as a masterpiece of Nara-period wooden architecture. The Kondo has a simple yet dignified appearance, and inside are the National Treasures, such as the seated statue of Rushanabutsu and the statue of Senju Kannon (the Thousand-Armed Kannon). These Buddhist statues combine elaborate carving techniques with deep religious significance and fascinate visitors.
Another highlight is the lecture hall. The auditorium exhibits Buddhist scriptures and cultural assets brought back from China by Ganjin Wajo, giving visitors a deep insight into the history and culture of Toshodaiji. In particular, the seated statue of Ganjin Wajo is a must-see for its realistic representation and historical value, as it is a statue of the actual figure of Ganjin Wajo.
The precincts of Toshodai-ji are also surrounded by beautiful gardens, where visitors can enjoy the changing nature of the seasons. Each visit offers a different view: cherry blossoms in spring, lotuses in summer, autumn leaves in autumn and snowy landscapes in winter. In particular, the reflection of the Golden Hall in the lotus pond is a popular spot for photography enthusiasts.
Furthermore, on 6 June every year, Toshodai-ji Temple holds the 'Ganjin Wajo Memorial', which attracts many worshippers. On this day, a special memorial service is held to commemorate the legacy of Ganjin Wajo, allowing visitors to deeply experience the history and culture of Toshodai-ji.
Toshodai-ji Temple is an attractive tourist destination for its historical value, beautiful ancient architecture and rich cultural heritage. Visitors can experience the fusion of ancient Japanese Buddhism and Chinese culture and enjoy a moment of tranquillity. When visiting Nara, be sure to visit Toshodai-ji Temple and enjoy its charms.
