About Yakushiji(Temple)

Yakushiji Temple, located in Nishinokyo-cho, Nara City, Nara Prefecture, is a leading Buddhist temple in Japan, founded in the Asuka period. It was initiated by Emperor Temmu and completed during the reign of Emperor Jito. Known for its beautiful architecture and rich cultural assets, Yakushiji Temple was inscribed as part of UNESCO's World Heritage Site "Cultural Assets of Ancient Nara" in 1998.

The most striking feature of Yakushiji Temple is its beautifully symmetrical layout of the temple buildings. The eastern and western pagodas standing side by side are particularly spectacular, and the eastern pagoda is so beautifully carved that it has been described as 'frozen music'. The Eastern Pagoda is a valuable architectural reminder of the original construction, and its three-storey pagoda is a masterpiece of Nara-period architectural technology. The West Pagoda, on the other hand, has been restored and forms a beautiful silhouette of Yakushiji Temple, in balance with the East Pagoda.

Another highlight is the three statues of Yakushi Sanzon enshrined in the Kondo hall. Centred on the Yakushi Nyorai statue and flanked on both sides by Nikko Bosatsu and Gekko Bosatsu, this group of Buddhist statues is regarded as a masterpiece of Buddhist sculpture from the Asuka period. The expressions on their faces and the flow of their robes show the high level of sculpting techniques of the time and the deep spirituality of Buddhist art.

Furthermore, Yakushiji Temple houses many national treasures and important cultural assets. For example, the Toindo Hall houses the statue of Sei Kannon, whose elegant appearance and expression fascinate visitors. In the Genjo Sanzoin Temple complex, there is an exhibition celebrating the legacy of the high priest Genjo Sanzo from the Tang dynasty in China, where visitors can learn about the history of the introduction of Buddhism.

Yakushiji Temple is also a place where the natural beauty of the seasons can be enjoyed. In spring, the cherry blossoms bloom, in summer the trees are lush and green, and in autumn the autumn leaves are beautifully coloured. The harmony between these natural features and ancient architecture leaves a deep impression on visitors.

Yakushiji Temple is an attractive tourist destination for its beautiful architecture, rich cultural heritage and seasonal nature. Visitors can enjoy a moment of tranquillity while experiencing the Buddhist culture of ancient Japan. When visiting Nara, be sure to visit Yakushiji Temple and enjoy its history and beauty.
