Kasugayama Primeval Forest

About Kasugayama Primeval Forest

The Kasugayama Primeval Forest is a vast nature reserve located in Nara City, Nara Prefecture, and is part of Nara Park. This primeval forest has been protected from any logging since the Nara period (710-794), and its pristine nature has been preserved. As a result, a rich ecosystem is still maintained today, and in 2004 it was registered as part of UNESCO's World Heritage Site "Cultural Assets of the Ancient Capital of Nara".

The main attraction of the Kasuga-yama Primeval Forest is its rich nature and tranquillity. The vast area of approximately 500 hectares is covered with centuries-old trees and a diverse range of plants, offering beautiful scenery in all four seasons. Fresh greenery in spring, lush forests in summer, autumn leaves in autumn and snowy landscapes in winter - a different look every time you visit.

There are numerous hiking trails in the primeval forest, which can be enjoyed by beginners and experienced hikers alike. A particularly popular course is the Kasuga Mountain Trail. This route takes hikers from Kasuga Taisha Shrine via Todaiji Temple and Wakakusa Mountain, allowing them to enjoy the natural beauty of Mount Kasuga to the full. Along the way, there is a sacred area known as the 'sacred forest', where you can feel the special atmosphere of a fusion of ancient beliefs and nature.

The Kasuga Mountain Primeval Forest is also a treasure trove of diverse flora and fauna. It is home to a wide variety of birds, insects and mammals, making it an ideal place to enjoy nature observation. In particular, many wild birds are active early in the morning and in the evening, and the area is crowded with birdwatchers.

With its rich natural environment and historical background, the Kasuga-yama Primeval Forest is a tourist attraction that offers healing and inspiration to visitors. The area is easily accessible from the centre of Nara City, and through nature walks and hiking, visitors can experience the harmony between nature and culture that has existed since ancient times in Japan. When visiting Nara, be sure to visit the Kasuga-yama Primeval Forest and enjoy its charms.
