Zakimi Castle Ruins, located in Yomitan Village, Okinawa Prefecture, was built in the early 15th century and played an important role as a defense base during the Ryukyu Kingdom. The builder of the castle was Gosamaru, a famous general of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and it is regarded as a masterpiece of Okinawan stone architecture. The Zakimi Castle Ruins were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 as part of the “Gusuku and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.

The most distinctive features of Zakimi Castle Ruins are its beautifully arched castle gate and its curving stone walls. The castle gate has an arched shape, which is rare among Okinawan castles (gusuku), and its graceful curves fascinate visitors.
