About Shikinaen

Shikinaen was built in the 18th century as a villa for the royal family of the Ryukyu Kingdom and was mainly used as a guest house, and was registered as part of the World Heritage Site “Gusuku and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu” in 2000, and its cultural value is highly valued.
The most distinctive feature of Shikinaen Garden is its pond garden. There is a large pond in the center of the garden, which is surrounded by a promenade. The pond is crossed by six bridges, including a Chinese-style stone bridge called “Tsukimi Bridge,” which offers a particularly beautiful view. In the center of the pond is a small island on which stands Hexagonal Hall. This hall was used by royalty to rest and recite poetry, and is a symbol of the scenic garden.
The charm of Shikinaen is its blend of exotic architecture and Okinawa's unique natural environment. The park is dotted with stone walls made of Ryukyu limestone and Chinese-style architecture, which blend with beautiful flowers and lush greenery. The natural beauty of the garden changes with the seasons, so visitors can enjoy a different view each time they visit.
