Sonohiyanutaki Ishimon, located in Naha City, Okinawa, is one of the most important cultural heritage sites of the Ryukyu Kingdom period, built in the 16th century and known as the sacred site of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Gusuku and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu” in 2000.

This stone gate is located near Shuri Castle of the Kingdom of the Ryukyus, and was used as a place for royalty to visit for religious worship during the Kingdom period. Sonohiyamu Utaki itself was a sacred place of prayer, and the Ishimon served as its entrance. Through this gate, royalty could enter the Utaki.

The main feature of Sonohiyamu Utaki Ishimon is its beautiful stone arched structure. This stone gate is made of Ryukyu limestone, and its construction technique shows the advanced masonry skills of the Ryukyu Kingdom at that time. The exquisite decoration on the top of the gate shows the unique aesthetic sense of the Ryukyu Kingdom period. In particular, the Shisa sculpture atop the gate, known as the guardian deity of Okinawa, gives visitors a sacred atmosphere.
