Rinnoji(Temple)

About Rinnoji(Temple)

Rinnoji Temple is located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, and is known as the central temple of Nikko Mountain. The temple was founded by Shodo Shonin in 766 during the Nara period. Rinno-ji Temple, together with Toshogu Shrine and Futaarasan Shrine, is registered as part of the World Heritage Site 'Shrines and Temples of Nikko' as 'Ni-sha-ichiji'.

Rinno-ji's main features are its magnificent architecture and rich cultural heritage. In particular, the Sanbutsudo Hall is a must-see. Sanbutsudo is the main hall of Mount Nikko and houses the 16-metre-high Daibutsu Sanzon (Three Great Buddha Images). These Buddhist statues - the Thousand-Armed Kannon, the Amida Nyorai and the Horse-headed Kannon - each reflect the style of a different era and leave a deep impression on visitors.

There are also many important cultural assets within the precincts of Rinno-ji. For example, Taiyuin is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu, and its gorgeous decoration and architectural style is comparable in beauty to Toshogu Shrine. Climbing the stone steps of Taiyuin, you will find the Nitenmon Gate, Karamon Gate and the main mausoleum hall in front of the gate, each decorated with magnificent carvings.

Furthermore, the charm of Rinno-ji lies in its tranquil and sacred atmosphere. The area around the temple is surrounded by rich nature and offers seasonal scenery. The beautiful nature welcomes visitors throughout the year: cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in autumn and snowy landscapes in winter.

Rinno-ji Temple also offers a variety of events and training experiences. For example, there are sutra copying and Zen meditation experiences, as well as seasonal Buddhist memorial services, through which visitors can come into contact with the teachings and spirit of Buddhism.

A good point of interest when visiting is to first tour the precincts of the temple, focusing on the Sanbutsudo Hall, and then stroll around the Taiyuin and surrounding gardens. Especially during the autumn foliage season, many tourists visit the temple and are impressed by its beauty.

Rinno-ji Temple is an attractive tourist destination for its historical value, beautiful architecture and rich natural environment. Visitors can enjoy a moment of tranquillity while experiencing the profound teachings of Buddhism and traditional Japanese culture. When visiting Tochigi, be sure to visit Rinno-ji Temple and enjoy its charms.
