About Tokiwaso Manga Museum

Tokiwaso Manga Museum is located in Toshima-ku, Tokyo, and is considered a sacred place for manga enthusiasts. It is a facility that recreates Tokiwaso, an apartment building where many famous manga artists lived and created their works during the Showa period. Tokiwa-so is known as a place where artists essential to the history of Japanese manga, such as Osamu Tezuka, Fujiko Fujio (A), Fujiko F. Fujio, Shotaro Ishinomori, and Fujio Akatsuka, lived together and engaged in friendly competition. The museum is therefore a special space where visitors can experience the history and culture of manga.

The most distinctive feature of the Tokiwaso Manga Museum is that it faithfully recreates the exterior and interior of Tokiwaso as it was then. The museum realistically recreates the rooms where the manga artists lived, as well as the kitchens, corridors, and staircases they shared, allowing visitors to feel as if they have stepped back in time to the Showa period. In particular, the rooms used by the cartoonists as ateliers are reproduced with desks, chairs, writing materials, sketchbooks, and other items from those days, giving visitors a close look at the environment in which the cartoonists created their works.

In addition, the museum also features in-depth exhibits on the lives and careers of the manga artists who lived in Tokiwa-so. A large number of original drawings, sketches, letters, photographs, and other valuable materials of their representative works are on display, allowing visitors to learn about each cartoonist's personality and creative process. There are also videos and interviews showing episodes from those days and how they interacted with and influenced each other, allowing visitors to enjoy the secret stories behind the birth of manga and the stories behind their work.

The Tokiwaso Manga Museum also regularly holds workshops and events in which visitors can participate. A wide variety of programs are available, including lectures on how to create manga, talk shows with professional manga artists, and a manga experience corner for children, allowing visitors to enjoy manga culture more deeply. Through these experiences, visitors will further realize the appeal of manga and discover new discoveries and enjoyment.

More than just an exhibition facility, the Tokiwaso Manga Museum plays an important role in sharing the history and culture of manga and passing it on to the next generation. This place where visitors can learn about the depth of Japan's unique art and culture of manga while experiencing the passion and hard work of the manga artists of the Showa period is a tourist attraction worth a visit for everyone, not just manga fans.
