About Kuonji(Temple)

Kuonji Temple is the head temple of Nichiren Shoshu, located in Minobu-cho, Minamikoma-gun, Yamanashi Prefecture, and is known as the place where Nichiren, the founder of Nichiren Shoshu, spent his last years. The temple is located in the mountains of Mount Minobu, and its solemn atmosphere and natural beauty attracts visitors. Kuon-ji Temple is a historic sanctuary of Japanese Buddhism and a center of faith that attracts many worshippers from all over Japan.

The most significant features of Kuon-ji Temple are its magnificent precincts and overwhelming architectural beauty. The temple grounds are vast, with 287 stone steps leading up to the majestic main hall. The stone steps are known as a test of faith and a challenge for visitors, but once they reach the top, the grandeur of Kuonji Temple stretching beyond is inspiring. The main hall of the temple, in particular, has a majestic appearance that reminds visitors of its prestige as the center of Nichiren Buddhism.

Another attraction of Kuonji is the beautiful nature that changes from season to season. In spring, approximately 400 cherry trees are in full bloom, and the entire precincts are dyed in cherry blossom colors, a typical sight at Kuonji, which is also known as a cherry blossom viewing spot. In autumn, the mountains are decorated with autumn leaves, providing visitors with vivid natural beauty. In winter, Kuon-ji Temple is also covered with snow and enveloped in white silence, offering a beautiful view that evokes a solemn atmosphere.

At Kuonji Temple, visitors can also engage in practices and experiences based on the teachings of Nichiren Shoshu. Through Zen meditation and sutra copying, visitors are offered the opportunity to experience the spirit of Buddhism, a valuable experience for worshippers seeking spiritual peace of mind. The area surrounding the temple is also dotted with historical buildings such as the “Gobyojo” (mausoleum) and the “Sanmon” (three gates), and visitors can learn about the history of Nichiren Shoshu in depth while touring these buildings.

Kuonji Temple is not just a tourist attraction, but a special place where faith, history, and nature merge. Its serenity and solemnity give visitors peace of mind and inspiration, and are so appealing that they will want to visit again and again.
